Friends of Lembongan (FOL) is a community organisation established by the owners of Sandy Bay Beach Club to
assist in the clean up of rubbish, and promoting local education in sustainable and safe waste management practices
around the Desa Lembongan area. The plan is , to over the next few years gradually expand the programme island wide.
FOL has been operating since January 2012, and at present has a total of 38 rubbish bins dotted around the Desa Lembongan district with signage in both Bahasa Indonesia and English. We provide rubbish bags for each of the bins and the regular clean up campaigns. , In addition we supply rice bags for recyclable items and have employed a fulltime member of staff devoted to driving the Friends of Lembongan rubbish truck, emptying the bins and assisting with clean ups. By working closely with the local authorities, warungs and schools, FOL’s aim is to minimize plastic – particularly bags and bottles – and increase awareness about the harmful affects of burning rubbish along with burying waste or disposing of it on the ground and in the ocean. FOL has recently brought out biodegradable reusable market bags (thanks to help from “tas pasar” in Bali) and also sells logoed canvas shopping bags of which all proceeds go back
into the FOL funds. Additionally these fashionable logoed canvas bags will also be given to school children to help spread the word among the community. Friends of Lembongan conduct frequent cleanups with the help of Sandy Bay Beach Club staff, Glo Spa at Sandy Bay staff, Nusa Lembongan Villas staff and the four schools in the Desa Lembongan district. FOL intends to put a huge amount of focus on educating and motivating our children on the island – Nusa Lembongan’s next generation. There is a lot of work to be done and a long way to go but with the right focus we are convinced Nusa Lembongan can be the cleanest island in Indonesia. We can keep Nusa Lembongan smiling.
